Concepts in Organic Electronics

This textbook provides the essential principles of organic electronics from its fundamental concepts through to describing archetype devices that exploit the unique properties of the immense materials family of organic semiconductors in use today. An organic molecule is one that is carbon rich or carbon based. Formally, an organic molecule has at least one C–H bond. Many of these molecules, when in the solid phase, are electronic materials (i.e., they are used as conductors, as PEDOT:PSS, semiconductors, such as PTCDA, or insulators, such as PMMA). For active electronic devices, the large class of organic semiconductors are of greatest interest and are the focus of this book. Organic materials are also “soſt” materials: they are the substances of which plastics are composed, and their relatively weak intermolecular bonding forces make them exceptionally lightweight, malleable, bendable, and moldable into a variety of shapes. This is in contrast to conventional semiconductors (of which Si is the archetype) that are brittle and heavy. Hence, while conventional semiconductor circuits are inherently two-dimensional, organics can take on any number of forms and as a result are found in foldable displays, “electronic fabrics,” active sensors that conform to the skin, and so on. These unusual properties separate organic semiconductors from all other active electronic materials, allowing them to be used in applications that are limited only by the imagination of the engineers who are contemplating new uses that are not already populated by conventional electronic appliances.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for 6G and Beyond Wireless Networks

The fast-growing need to satisfy billions of mobile subscribers calls for the deployment of advanced wireless communication techniques to achieve the desired quality of service. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) are currently being explored to ameliorate several issues in wireless networks. RIS comprises passive elements that require limited active antennas at the base station (BS) to achieve energy efficiency and spectral gains. RIS, a key enabler for 6G wireless networks, has enormous potential to address signal loss between the transmitter and the receiver. RIS can be deployed to enhance the reliability of wireless systems in 6G and beyond. Additionally, RIS can be employed to mitigate interference in wireless communication systems. RIS supports simultaneous wireless information and power transfer and enhances security at the physical layer. Compared to relay-assisted technologies, RIS offers low cost and high efficiency. However, the computational complexity issue in RIS-assisted wireless networks design is still an issue that needs to be addressed holistically. In order to address this issue, among others, there is a need for a book that investigates the characteristics, benefits, and limitations of RIS deployment in advanced wireless communication systems.

RFID Applications. Secure and Efficient Backscatter Networking

This book introduces current efficient and secure backscatter networking schemes for RFID. The authors integrate these schemes with a concrete example, namely RFID-based missing item detection. The book presents a large palette of tools indispensable in the RFID-based passive IoT (such as compute complexity analysis, approximate algorithm design, the probabilistic data structure, and the protocol stack in COTS and software-defined RFID tags) and how these tools can be carefully tuned and adapted to be practically applied in RFID systems. The book elaborates the state-of-the-art research bringing the conventional data structure and traffic engineering technology in the core network into the emerging IoT applications of RFID. This does not only boost the performance for RFID systems, but also inspires new research directions. The authors believe that this book will interest researchers, professionals, and graduates working in RFID system design and engineering, low-power IoT as well as other related fields.
