The Use of Corpus-based Techniques in Literary Analysis: Exploring Learners’ Perceptions

Although corpus linguistics is now known to broaden our understanding of various phenomena in linguistics and literature, little research has been undertaken to examine its effects on the learning experience of learners in the literature class. This study was aimed at exploring how learners respond to the adaptation of corpus-based techniques in their literary analysis.

Introducing translation studies

Jeremy Mundays Introducing translation studies is an introductory textbook providing an accessible overwiev of the key contributions to translation studies.

Exploring Translation Theories

If we set out to describe a translation or an act of translating, the simple description might seem to require no grand theory. In fact, it could be considered too simple to be taken seriously by scholars. Some of the most significant concepts in European translation theory have nevertheless come from what we shall call a broad “descriptive paradigm,” and this chapter describes the ways that paradigm developed in the twentieth century.

Language and Journalism

This book is an indispensable “cutting edge” book for students and researchers of journalism studies seeking a text that illustrates and applies a range of linguistic and discourse-analytic approaches to the analysis of journalism. While the form, function and politics of the language of journalism have attracted scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines, too often this analysis has reduced the work of journalists to text-characteristics alone. In contrast, this collection is united by the principle that journalistic discourse is always socially situated and the result of a series of processes – produced by journalists in accordance with particular production techniques and in specific institutional settings – and as such, analysis requires more than the methods offered by linguists.

Cultural Linguistics

Cultural Linguistics is a multidisciplinary area of research that explores the relationship between language, culture, and conceptualisation. Originally, this area grew out of an interest in integrating cognitive linguistics with the three traditions present in linguistic anthropology, namely, Boasian linguistics, ethnosemantics, and the ethnography of speaking. In the last decade, Cultural Linguistics has also found strong common ground with cognitive anthropology, since both explore cultural models, which are associated with the use of language.
