Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea: Why the Greeks Matter
In this brilliant and engaging book, Thomas Cahill explores the profound and lasting impact of Ancient Greek civilization on the Western world. Through a lively narrative that touches on history, sociology, and religion, Cahill examines the key figures and ideas that shaped the Greek sensibility. From the epic poetry of Homer to the philosophical insights of Socrates and the artistic achievements of the classical age, the author highlights how the Greeks laid the foundations for Western thought, art, and democratic values. By synthesizing insights from diverse fields, Cahill provides a compelling argument for why the legacy of the Greeks remains essential to understanding our own modern world, challenges, and aspirations.

Robert Emmet: A Life
Robert Emmet (1778-1803) was one of the most romantic of all Irish revolutionaries. His doomed relationship with Sarah Curran, his failed rebellion at the age of twenty-five and the brilliance of his speech from the dock, captured the popular imagination and created a powerful and enduring legend. Born in Dublin, the youngest son of a state physician, Emmet was educated at Trinity College Dublin before his expulsion for radical activity in 1798. He visited the continent, discussing plans for liberating Ireland with Napoleon and Talleyrand. This book reveals for the first time the complex and ingenious plans that Emmet devised for the rebellion. His attempt to seize Dublin on 23 July 1803 was a dramatic failure, and he was captured shortly after. This work draws on new archival material from Ireland, the United Kingdom, France and the United States and is the first modern study of Robert Emmet in almost fifty years.

This book explores the way the national past is represented and used in contemporary Britain. Patrick Wright examines how history, heritage, and the 'national past' are constructed in political discourse, museums, and popular culture. Through a critical lens, the author uncovers the hidden meanings behind the preservation of ruins, the use of symbols, and the rhetoric of heritage, revealing how 'old' Britain is actively maintained to shape current societal perceptions.
