Although the concept of infectious diseases is to be found
in the works of classical Greek and Roman writers, their
microbial aetiology was not clearly established until the
mid-nineteenth century when it was confirmed by the sci-
entific contributions of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch.
During the intervening centuries a number of investigators
hypothesized about the nature of contagion and disease.
Girolamo Fracastoro was one of the first to suggest, in his
treatise De contagione published in 1546, that animate
agents were responsible for disease. One hundred years
later, Anthony van Leeuwenhoek demonstrated, in a
sample of pus from his gums, microscopic 'animalcules',
which were later identified as infectious agents.
